Invisalign works differently than traditional braces to straighten teeth. With regular braces, metal or ceramic brackets are applied to teeth and a cross wire is used to move the teeth to their desired position throughout treatment. With Invisalign, there are no brackets or wires. Instead, a series of clear, removable aligners are used to slowly move teeth into the correct position.
There are several advantages to using Invisalign versus traditional braces:
- The aligners are virtually invisible, which makes them perfect for adults and teens concerned about the “stigma” of regular braces.
- You remove Invisalign for eating and drinking so you can still eat exactly what you want! (Conventional braces have some restrictions for chewy/sticky foods)
- No extra effort is needed to brush and floss around braces! (You remove the aligners.)
- We take X-rays using a digital scanner which takes a 3-D replica of your teeth without the need for goopy trays!
- You come in for fewer office visits since you can change out the aligners yourself. Only periodic check-ups are required to review progress.
- Invisalign aligners are less irritating to the inside of the mouth and take less time to adjust to compared to traditional braces.
Getting Started with Invisalign
Dr. Taylor offers FREE no-obligation consultations to anyone interested in learning more about Invisalign. During the consultation, he will perform a complete exam, including a digital scan of your teeth and jaw, and can then advise you if you are a candidate for Invisalign and what your individual treatment plan would be. Fortunately, many of the same conditions that are treated with traditional braces can also able to be treated with Invisalign such as:
- Overcrowding
- Crooked teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Overbite
- Underbite
- Crossbite (upper and lower jaw doesn’t line up)
- Open bite (upper and lower teeth don’t touch)
Even if you’ve been told in the past that you are not a candidate for Invisalign, it’s worth having Dr. Taylor look. In many cases, he can to provide treatment based on his years of expertise and experience.
We use a digital scanner for x-rays that allows Dr. Taylor to show you how your teeth should look after treatment! This technology also lets him digitally design each aligner that will move the teeth to the desired result. We then send the designs directly to Invisalign where they will create them to the exact specifications for your teeth. They then send them to our office, custom made just for you, and ready to use.
Preparing for Your Aligners
There is some preparation work that needs to be done to your teeth in order to prepare them for the aligners. Dr. Taylor will bond a series of attachments or “bumps” to the teeth, so there is something for the aligners to grip to. These attachments are small and will match the color of your teeth. They’re applied so as to help you move your teeth in the correct direction.
We will give you all of your aligners at the beginning of treatment and Dr. Taylor will advise you on how often you should change them out, and how often to come into the office for a progress check.
Caring for Your Invisalign Aligners
Aligners are made of plastic and need to be cleaned every time they are removed, such as when eating, drinking, brushing your teeth, flossing, etc. To clean them, it is recommended that you use antibacterial soap and a soft toothbrush. This will prevent any build-up from occurring on the insides of the aligners and keep them sanitary when you place them back over your teeth.
Do not use any harsh cleaners, including any with strong scents or dyes to clean the aligners. These types of chemicals can cause the plastic to stain or scratch. It’s a good idea to soak your aligners once per day in either denture cleaner or Invisalign Crystals which are first dissolved in water before use.
Be careful to put your aligners in their designated tray while eating or drinking. A common mistake is to set them aside on a napkin while eating, and then accidentally throw the napkin away along with the aligners! You also should not put them in a place where they could become damaged or contaminated.
Make sure and brush your teeth after each meal before putting the aligner back in your mouth. This will prevent residual food particles or bacteria from being trapped between your teeth and your aligner, which can lead to cavities.
